Speaker: Julie Mancuso, Olympic and World Championship Skier
When Julia was 18 she was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. After an initial consultation with a hip specialist she was told that she would have to make a choice between competing and undergoing a life changing surgery. The option of never getting the chance to stand on an Olympic podium was completely out of the question, and Julia went on to prove that no matter what cards you are given, anything is possible.
Julia shares her story of how she was able to overcome adversity to reach her goal of winning gold in the 2006 winter Olympics, and how she persevered through 18 years on the World Cup tour to retire as the most decorated female Olympian in American skiing history.
Speaker: Terry Buske, Regional Vice President, ClearBalance; Advisor with the Texas Medical Center’s Innovation Institute; and Fellow with The Center for Houston’s Future; Frederic C. (Freddy) Warner Jr., JD, Chief Government Relations Officer, Memorial Hermann Health System
The success or failure of any government in the final analysis must be measured by the well-being of its citizens. Nothing can be more important to a state than its public health; the state’s paramount concern should be the health of its people.
Healthcare organizations and their leaders often are called upon to be pillars of the community. In today’s society, health systems must serve twin goals of fulfilling fundamental needs for population health and wellness initiatives, and adapting to the forces of consumerism, while also driving visionary requirements for the community at large.
In fact, it’s commonplace for health system leaders to participate and even spearhead strategic partnerships with a range of local commercial and civic organizations to create the conditions for citizens to be as healthy as possible and to make the region as attractive and vibrant as possible for new growth and investment.
The Center for Houston’s Future, formed even before Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc in 2017, is the hub for planning Houston’s future in 2040. Healthcare plays a vital role as one of the key planks. This group’s leadership is complemented by the vision and initiatives of the Texas Medical Center, which itself is a collaborative among the very best of Texas’ statewide medical community.
In this session, learn the steps Houston’s healthcare leaders are taking to ensure a sound care delivery infrastructure capable of weathering any storm, while planning for a future that entices ongoing and new corporate, civic and individual investment that will carry the region through the next several decades.
